A Luzerne County hunter shot a 708-pound bear, the second-largest taken in the state through the third day of the four-day season.

Only Michael Rubeo of Mercer has bagged a larger bear. He took a bear that weighed 780 pounds on Nov. 19 in Howe Twp., Forest County.
Corrina Kishbaugh of Nanticoke downed a bear that weighed 623 pounds on Nov. 17 in Newport Twp. and Brian Bonner Jr. of McAdoo took a 604-pounder in Hazle Twp.

The statewide harvest of 1,833 bears is up 12 percent compared with the first three days of last year.
In Luzerne County, hunters took 50 bears, which is 15 more bears than harvested through the third day of last year’s season.
