Well, that wasn’t exactly a thrilling start to the on-ice action this season.
If you weren’t at Mohegan Sun Arena, you missed a 5-1 shellacking by Hershey. The Penguins took way too many penalties during the game, and the offense never really manufactured any chances.
As expected, the roster was filled mainly with camp invitees fighting to make the roster in any way. I mention in our print game story that Donatelli praised the play of goalie Colin Stevens, who was pretty much hung out to dry on a couple of his tallies allowed. He also gave kudos to defenseman Dan Milan, saying he defended well and won a lot of his one-on-one battles.
But he was definitely not happy with the effort, and he made that even clearer moments later when he said that the regulars will make their way into the lineup on Friday.
“We’ll see most of our guys,” he said. “Friday and Sunday for sure.”
Expect the first wave of cuts to come tomorrow.
Another note from the game was the absence of everyone’s favorite mascot, Tux.
We were told after the game the plan is for the lovable penguin to be returning to the team very soon. There is no exact expectancy date, though.
I’ll be at practice tomorrow – it is now at the arena and NOT open to the public. We’ll hopefully get our first look at Sprong, Aston-Reese and all the rest of the gang.
