Anyone can fish for $1 on Labor Day.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission offers that special fee for a Labor Day license to state residents and tourists so anyone can enjoy a day on the water.

Labor Day occurs on Sept. 4.

Two weeks later on Sept. 19, young people who obtain free mentored youth permits or buy optional youth licenses can take panfish of any size from lakes where catches are otherwise restricted to fish of a certain length.

The waters open during the mentored youth day for panfish include Bradys and Gouldsboro lakes in Monroe County, where usually sunfish must be 7 inches and yellow and perch and crappies must be 9 inches.

At Promised Land State Park, the upper and lower lakes also are open to mentored youth. Normally the limits in those lakes are 7 inches for sunfish and 9 inches for yellow perch.

During mentored youth day, anyone may fish in the waters, but only young people accompanied by a mentor may take smaller-than-regulation panfish.

Other lakes open during the program in the following counties are:

Berks – Blue Marsh Reservoir

Cambria – Beaverdam Run Reservoir, Hinkston Run Reservoir, Wilmore Dam

Centre – Foster Joseph Sayers Lake

Chester – Chambers Lake

Fayette – Bridgeport Reservoir

Montour – Lake Chillisquaque

Somerset – Quemahoning Reservoir

Washington – Cross Creek Lake, Peters Twp. Lake (Reservoir #2)
