(Final update) SHIPPENSBURG — The Wyoming Valley Conference’s medal count started right away at the PIAA Track and Field Championships.
It stalled at two top-eight finishes as the first day of states went on, but several other WVC athletes are still in the medal hunt after qualifying for Saturday’s track semifinals and finals.
Northwest junior Matt Saxe took fourth place in the Class 2A boys javelin in the event held just outside Shippensburg’s Seth Grove Stadium. The Rangers’ District 2 champion reached 180-foot-3 on his fifth attempt, nearly 10 feet farther than any of his other five tries.
Back inside the stadium’s infield, Hanover Area junior Asad Whitehead placed eighth in the Class 2A boys long jump. The first-year jumper, who’s also District 2’s triple jumper champion, earned his spot on the medal stand at 21-foot-2.5.
On the track, Saturday’s semifinals and finals are set up.
Meyers senior Nazir Dunell is a Class 3A boys 110 hurdles semifinalist. In the 100 and 200, Holy Redeemer freshman Karissa Spade moved on to the 2A girls semis, and Coughlin junior Rafael McCoy did the same in the 3A boys. Dallas’ Alondra Church is another 200 semifinalist in 3A girls.
Lake-Lehman’s Abby Paczewski is a finalist in the Class 2A girls 1600, and Abby Lapinski, Anna Capaci, Madison Dewees and Spade got Redeemer’s 4×400 relay into today’s finals.
Lake-Lehman’s girls missed the cut for the finals in the 4×100 relay, but today was far from a disappointment. The Black Knights finished their preliminary heat in 51.80 to take down a 10-year-old school record (51.84).
