Wednesday was supposed to mark the start of Wyoming Valley Conference boys soccer in Division 1, but rain got in the way for the second consecutive day.

After half of Tuesday’s four-game slate in Division 2 was washed out, Wednesday’s entire schedule needed to be postponed due to persistent rain. A potentially exciting day of soccer was taken away — matches included a District 2 Class 3A quarterfinals rematch between Dallas and Valley West; a clash of two teams with identical 2016 records (8-4-2) in Crestwood and Coughlin; and Hazleton Area at Wyoming Area, a series that was high-scoring last year and decided the two teams’ order in the final league standings.

Fans will have to wait to catch all three of those matches, plus Pittston Area’s clash at Tunkhannock that rounded out the schedule. Rain dates haven’t been posted for any of the games save for Hazleton Area at Wyoming Area, which will now be a late-season showdown on at 11 a.m. on Oct. 14.

Due to this week’s weather, only five games have been played by six total teams since Division 2 kicked the year off on Sept. 1. It’s still far too early to tell how the season will turn out, but Lake-Lehman and Holy Redeemer couldn’t have gotten off to much better starts. Lehman posted a 10-1 win over GAR and a 6-1, rain shortened win over MMI Prep, while Redeemer ran away with 9-1 and 10-3 wins over Hanover Area and GAR to start their seasons.

Here’s a quick look at the current Division 2 landscape via District 2’s website, with three teams still waiting to hit the field.

With any luck, the rest of Division 2’s teams will get their first games in the books on Thursday. The four-game schedule includes:

  • GAR at Nanticoke Area, 4:15
  • Hanover Area at Meyers, 4:15
  • Holy Redeemer at Lake-Lehman, 6:30
  • MMI Prep at Wyoming Seminary, 7
